Reconstruction update of the A2 motorway around Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
Opened between 1961 and 1974 with 2x2 lanes, widened to 2x3 lanes in 2004 and now for a full reconstruction into 4x2 lanes. Eindhoven is the 5th largest city in the Netherlands, with a metropolitan population of 750,000. The A2 is the only link in the region, used by both east-west and north-south traffic, and faced significant congestion before the widening to 6 lanes. The current reconstruction will add a local-express setup with 8 lanes overall, with another option to 10 lanes for the further future. The current A2 mostly runs across the future local lanes, which are now temporarily 3 lanes each way. They will be downgraded to N2 with 2 lanes and a shoulder each way.
This project counts as one of the most impressive going on in the Netherlands as of 2009. Most of the A2 motorway is currently under reconstruction, being widened from 6 to 10 lanes between Amsterdam and Utrecht, and from 4 to 8 lanes south of Utrecht and from 6 to 8 lanes around Den Bosch. Another project will include an 8 lane tunnel under the city of Maastricht in the deep south. This tunnel will feature two decks, 4 lanes for through, and 4 lanes for local traffic.
