On October 25th-October 27th the Community Empowerment Association conducted a conference in Station Square, Pittsburgh, Pa. featuring Dr. Wade Nobles, Dr. Joy DeGruy and Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith that attracted public health scientists, health policy makers, educators, researchers, service providers, social workers, community leaders, community residents, students in the major theme area fields, representatives of community based organizations providing services to underserved communities and anyone interested in eliminating disparities within the African American community. The purpose of the conference was to establish the foundation of replicable multidisciplinary collaborative models, approaches and frameworks that will address disparities in the major theme areas selected and will be found feasible for implementation.
The importance of a needed change that allows for "community-centered" organizations, leadership and practitioners to emerge and demonstrate their collective expertise and capacities to reach those in the African American communities who are the most vulnerable and least served.
