This is the first rap song I heard that I recognized as "something new." I later learned that Blondie's "Rapture" and M's "Pop Muzik" had been patterned after this New York sound, and I'd heard them before this one, but "Friends" was the first song I heard on radio that made me think, "Hey, this is different!"
