Yes, capturing the mood of the Lovecraft story is crucial to conveying true desolation in the face of absolute horror. Even odors are described in detail.
The part in "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" where the wizard is attacked by townspeople is rife with this - the odors upon breaking open the riverfront door to the underground tunnels. The townsmen returning with their clothes saturated with ghastly smells.
