Merry-go-round of Death Merry-go-round of Death Complete

This fun physics experiment is conducted first by 4 and later by 8 high school athletes. This is a composite video of 5 out of 8 takes. A lot is learned, but mostly a lot of fun is had by all.

The principle is that when the radial center of mass moves inward toward the axis, the inertia of the bodies traveling in a smaller circle results in the merry-go-round spinning faster proportional to the inverse of the radial center of mass.

If you watch, you can see the merry-go-round speed up when the riders pull in.... and it's harder to pull in than you'd think.

Theres a little bowl thing im my local park that spins and when u lean in the middle it basicly chucks you out as it spin so fast!! I take its the same as this? lol

you guys can think of this as an olympic ice skater. when they're spinning and curl up in a ball to concentrate their mass they spin very fast. moment of inertia.

@arias1772, Yes, that's true, but I think this illustrates it in a way that people can experiment with a) more easily, and b) in groups. ;-)
