  • How many times do you re-use your arrows? Also, how much do they cost?

  • @Frodojo111 We expect these arrows to last for many years of use, and therefore thousands of shots. They only break when we do stupid things like shoot at car doors or replica armour! The most expensive part of the arrow is the head, which can cost from £1 up to £25 depending on the design, but a typical arrow usually comes out at around £12 if using a £7 head. (shaft £2, fletchings £1.50 then allow a quid or two for horn insert, glue, linen binding and oil finish).

  • All these videos are the same. Armor maker videos never show penetration at all. Bow maker videos show penetration with every single shot. The leather they are using is NOT Cuir Bouilli. It bends too much when they are pulling the arrows out. It's still soft. That's WHY the arrows are just going through it. Unbiased videos are just really hard to find.

  • @MWCharke Our video is not biased. The leather was a surplus piece left over from a TV documentary presented by Mike Loades showing the effectiveness of Cuir Bouilli against arrows. We did not make it ourselves, we have to trust that what we are given is genuine. We are not here to make a case for or against the bow. We find interesting objects to shoot at, examine the results then put on here for others to share. We would do so even if every arrow bounced off.

  • What is the distance?

Were armour items of cuir bouilli likely to have been as thick as shown here?

  • @conqueringlord The guys were shooting at a range of only 15 yards. Cuir Bouilli would have been used in a range of thicknesses so I don't think it is worth generalising here as I don't know enough about that form of armour. The point of the video was rather to show whether this thickness of leather could stand up to an arrow hit, rather than to simulate any historically accurate armour. Hope you enjoyed it.

  • i dont see the problem, looks like the cuir bouilli held up admirably. if you were wearing just one sheet you would be protected from arrows (the head didnt go in enough to kill you just wound you a bit.) two sheets and the arrows didnt even get through, considering people regularly wore more than one layer of leather plus padding and potentially chain or plate mail on top of that i think the armour is quite effective.
