I don't understand either. It's pretty obvious that both countries have everything to gain from a partnership with eachother - conflict is counterproductive. The only answer I can come up with is the personal Napoleonic complex and arrogance of many cold warrior politicians who want to see the US as master of the planet and want to see Russia "put back in it's place" A strong Russia isnt in their interest, even if it's a peaceful Russia
