In this Askwith Forum, HGSE Professor Howard Gardner reflects on the 25 years since he proposed his new theory and definition of intelligence in his 1983 book entitled "Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences"
@mcamelyne "Professor Gardner's theories should be given the opportunity to be explored further." But MI has been around for 25 years! The theory of plate tectonics was supported by quality findings is less time! I'm not joking, look it up.
As for NCLB and learning theory, you're right about their shortcomings, but using MI in schools would only be adding more unsupported nonsense to the childrens' days.
I like the comments saying MI has no validity or peer research to back it. I am curious where the research is that supports the objectives of the NCLB act that our entire nation has gotten behind. Since psychology has been unable to present a coherent universal model of learning or adequately explain personality development, Professor Gardner's theories should be given the opportunity to be explored further.
once you have defied at which intelligences you excell more than others, should you than focus on the onces that are a bit "lower" or specialize in the ones that are a bit "higher". Because their is a dangerour of discrepation or creating some sort of gap. I recommand ken robinson's speech at the ted website as well. I wonder what professor Gardner would say about this....
@taunohagelberg I'm not sure that criticism of MI is based on "ideological bent" as much as based on the actual evidence.
I've read both those books and several more. Neither they nor the peer-reviewed research contain evidence that interpersonal, intrapersonal, musical, naturalist, or existential intelligence reside in different portions of the brain. I've read Gardner's claims about this, but they are not consistent with the actual evidence.
Criticisms shotgunned at Dr. Gardner include the lack of scientific evidence in support of Multiple Intelligences. Voices of this ideological bent should read "Multiple Intelligences" and "Frames of Mind."
Evidence exists from physiology, psychology and education that the following gifts reside in different portions of the human skull in various amounts:
Geez, 25 years of how popular MI is, and not one mention of any evidence of its validity. Not one instance of MI helping kids be better prepared to face the world. NOT ONE. What a perfect example of the emperor having no clothes!
When will education stop giving its finite resources to these unsupported fads, and start demanding that precious money be spent on educational practices that are shown to truly help the kids.
multiple intelligence by howard gardner this theory states that all individuals are capable of developing at least seven domains namely logical mathematical, verbal linguistics, musical, visual spatial, bodily kinesthetic, interpersonal , intrapersonal, naturalist, existentialist
I initially began my journey in teaching using the basics of MI and now after 13 years I have perfected a recipe in the ESL classroom using MI combined with critical thinking.. I am a fan of Project Zero and Mr. Gardner whom I was lucky enough to hear speak at the 14th annual ICOT conference last year

Do you know of any good support for MI?

This video could have as easily been titled, "Howard Gardner: A Mind (and Life) in Review."

Howard Gardner is like the Charles Darwin of Developmental Psychology, i.e., it wasn't his idea that was original, but the way he articulated it.

Try to find independent supporting evidence.
