The intro to BBC's Nine O'Clock News (anchored by Angela Rippon) from 1978, in which the top story was British Prime Minister James Callaghan deciding against a general election. That didn't sit well with Conservative Party leader Margaret Thatcher, and the "Winter of Discontent" would lead to Callaghan calling for an election...or else.

On May 3, 1979, Thatcher would cement her place in British history as their first female Prime Minister.

  • If Callaghan had called an election in '78 it would have resulted in a hung parliament. However Labour would have still been the biggest party. They could have hammered out a deal with the Liberals. Thatcher would have been sacked by the tories and Britain would still be a good place to live. Mistake Jim, mistake...

  • @ukipwarrior. ukipwarrior? HAHA. Nigel Farage's "best friend" more like. XD

  • @densaner77 most have criminal records, are immigrants who should not be here or are not able to work as a result of high labour costs. Recession is two consecutive contractions in GDP over two quarters. economic disaster brought about by excessive unrestrained government spending on social experiments and welfare careerists.

  • @ukipwarrior. Unlike now. Unemployment, recession, economic disaster. Lovely.

  • @densaner77 yeah the 70s were awesome....strikes, strikes strikes. Lovely

  • The 9 o clock news actually started at 9.03 pm. Sorry to be pedantic.

  • @maclachj1 The time can clearly be seen on the continuity clock before the news begins. All right all right it might be 9.01.

  • @tvc18 uh....please quote your source.....I'm intrigued how you'll back that statement up

  • Thanks for upping this bit of history. The 9pm news was at 9.02 that day I see...

  • @Edgey1988 You are bang wrong. It is an economic fact in 1978 the average British person was better off than at any time before then and at any time after then.

  • @densaner77 Lol are you serious? Britain was a terrible place to live in 1978 and 79. It was a far better place to live in 1997.
