BBC Nine O'Clock News (1978)

The intro to BBC's Nine O'Clock News (anchored by Angela Rippon) from 1978, in which the top story was British Prime Minister James Callaghan deciding against a general election. That didn't sit well with Conservative Party leader Margaret Thatcher, and the "Winter of Discontent" would lead to Callaghan calling for an election...or else.

On May 3, 1979, Thatcher would cement her place in British history as their first female Prime Minister.

If Callaghan had called an election in '78 it would have resulted in a hung parliament. However Labour would have still been the biggest party. They could have hammered out a deal with the Liberals. Thatcher would have been sacked by the tories and Britain would still be a good place to live. Mistake Jim, mistake...
