She was performing in a night club under the name of Doris Payne when the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, walked in and discovered her. Brown introduced her to Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records, and Doris handed him a demo of "Just One Look", a song she had co-written. Wexler liked it so much that he released the recording as is, and it went to #10 during the summer of '63.

Just one listen to the divine Doris Troy singing "Just One Look," & I am seized by the thought, "God is Good." This song is one of joy, revelation, the ecstasy of first love first glimpsed, & eternally kept within the heart. Doris sings this with a controlled abandon that marks the very best of vocal artistry, a passion that liberates the soul with illuminable frissons that secretly shout "Satori! Eureka! Hallelujah! & Amen!" This song is the most wondrous of all one-hit wonders. Majestic.
