KARK, Channel 4 (www.ArkansasMatters.com) in Little Rock's coverage of the news that Daniel Johnson, a senior EAST student from Sylvan Hills High School has been awarded the Prudential Spirit of Community Award honoring outstanding community service by young Americans as a result of his involvement in the Arkansas Cemetery Mapping Project (an EAST project) and his work with the Director of Veterans Affairs for the State of Arkansas.

As a State Honoree, he will receive a $1,000 award. He is also being considered as a National Honoree and eligible for an additional $5,000 award and will be presented with an engraved Spirit of Community medallion.

In early May he will be flown to Washington, D.C. along with the other State Honorees for several days of special recognition events in our nations capital. He will attend an awards ceremony at the Smithsonians Museum of Natural History and an awards luncheon at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce building near the White House. Along with this, Daniel will receive the Presidents Volunteer Service Award, recognizing Americans of all ages who volunteer significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country.

Johnson, 17, of Sherwood, Arkansas, launched an effort to map and compile information on the 3,500 gravesites in the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery as part of his work in EAST, to help relatives locate the final resting places of their loved ones and ensure that the veterans buried there are never forgotten. "After going out to the cemetery and seeing people struggling to find the headstone they were looking for, I realized this would be a great way to help the community," said Daniel.
