  • In some situations, food from the Third World can have a smaller carbon footprint than locally produced food. A report by DEFRA in 2005 found that "food miles" are not an accurate indicator of sustainability. You also must take into account that farmers in the Third World, especially those who are farming under a fair-trade label, may need the profits more than a local farmer in a developed nation. Food is an ethical minefield.
