Joe meant what he said, that's why he wasn't comfortable with the usual greedy arisocratic lifestyle of rock stars. the clash questioned the comercial aspect of their music constanly, compare that with the likes of U2, david bowie etc. The clash could have been stadium rock multi millionaires but chose artistic integrity instead.
