Today's post introduces the fourth of country singer Merle Hazard's Euro-shanties, this one taking off on the Ode to Joy from Beethoven's 9th. Teutonic C&W. Merle (if not Beethoven) will do anything to educationally amuse. So will we.

The full post, 'Ode to Germany: Merle Hazard, Backed by Beethoven,' is here http://to.pbs.org/efuO0F

And for the lyrically-inclined, check out Making Sen$e for a European debt woes contest: http://to.pbs.org/dE516G

Here are Merle's lyrics to get you started:
(Melody: the "Ode to Joy," from the 9th Symphony of Ludwig Van Beethoven)

Germany's the soundest country that is in the Euro-zone
But we now are quite concerned about the bonds our bankers own

Loans to Greece, Italia, Espana, Portugal, Ireland, Belgium, too
Our European brothers may have trouble paying when they're due

When the Euro finally happened, we were relieved and overjoyed
Now we're feeling somewhat ill, with just a twinge of Schadenfreude

For an overview of the entire series, watch a web chat video between Paul Solman and Merle over on Making Sen$e: http://to.pbs.org/frgvsV
