Their Majesties were on their way back from an exhibit in Ueno Park and we were fortunate enough to be able to wave at them on Friday, November 27th 2009. The area was full of polite policemen in dark suits whose job was to clear the path. The Imperial couple was very majestic and regal as they drove by with open windows, waving at us. You can see the golden Imperial Crest on the black car, which is a Toyota Century, the car traditionally used by VIPs and Japanese corporate executives.

What an honor: when Michiko sama was the closest to me, I waived at her, saying "Otsukaresama desu!" which roughly means, thank you for working so hard. The Imperial Couple have a very busy schedule as they attend to their Imperial duties and travel Japan and the world on official visits. I am not sure if it was Michiko sama, but a lady then responded "ha-i" or yes, thanks (in this context).
