I read that the distance is about 3228ly, but according to wikipedia it's 1440ly.what is it?

...but how did u turn what were clearly 2-d images into [a reasonable facsimile of] 3-d?
(or to be more precise, I'm guessing: what app, and how does IT discriminate what's to be fore-ground, middle-, back-, etc?)

The lower figure is a more recent (and improved) estimate. A lot of the trouble nailing the distance down has been that Deneb is in a state of flux, as it moves toward becoming a red supergiant star. A star farther along the same course is Rho Cassiopeiae, which some astronomers think might have gone supernova already (we just haven't seen the light of that event yet).

Windows Movie Maker - I was playing around with the effects and got some good results on *SOME* of the star field pix with the "warp" effect (not kidding - that's what it's called).
