One of the brightest stars in our sky - one of the brightest in the entire Galaxy, even - is the star Deneb in the constellation Cygnus. Let' s go check it out. :)

  • The lower figure is a more recent (and improved) estimate. A lot of the trouble nailing the distance down has been that Deneb is in a state of flux, as it moves toward becoming a red supergiant star. A star farther along the same course is Rho Cassiopeiae, which some astronomers think might have gone supernova already (we just haven't seen the light of that event yet).

  • Windows Movie Maker - I was playing around with the effects and got some good results on *SOME* of the star field pix with the "warp" effect (not kidding - that's what it's called).

  • I read that the distance is about 3228ly, but according to wikipedia it's 1440ly.what is it?

  • denber

  • Thanks that helps a lot.

  • Beautiful- nicely done! Thanks :)

  • Beautiful!

...but how did u turn what were clearly 2-d images into [a reasonable facsimile of] 3-d?

(or to be more precise, I'm guessing: what app, and how does IT discriminate what's to be fore-ground, middle-, back-, etc?)

  • Beautiful images to a beautiful song! I guess this is going to be my favorite piece by you :)
