Island of Dr. Brain - 1000 Points

There are 26 different puzzles in the Island of Dr. Brain.

Raw score: For each puzzle, the raw score reflects the highest plaque earned: 5 points for Bronze (Novice), 10 points for Silver (Standard), and 15 points for Gold (Expert). For example, if you solve a particular puzzle at all three levels, your raw score for that puzzle is 15 points. If you only solve it on Expert level and not the others, your raw score for that puzzle is still 15 points. (Although the Map Puzzle only has one difficulty, it still awards a Gold plaque.)

Max Raw Score: 26 x 15 = 390

Extra Credit: For most puzzles, one point extra credit can be earned for the first four times you play each of the three difficulty levels. However, the first time you play doesn't count as extra credit obviously, so 11 extra points can be earned per puzzle.

The exceptions to this rule are the initial Map Puzzle, which only has one difficulty level (Gold plus 3 extra credit), and the Word Search puzzle, which can earn extra credit for the first seven times played at each difficulty (20 extra credit).

Max Extra Credit:
(24x11) + 3 + 20 = 287

Hint Charges: Every unused Hint Charge counts as one point in your final score. The Hint Watch already has 1 charge before you start. Hint charges are awarded every time you solve a puzzle, as long as it is either the first time you solve it, or one deserving of extra credit. In addition, 9 bonus points are awarded if you manage to get through all the puzzles without ever using the Hint Watch.

Max Hint Charges Score:
1 + (24x12) + 4 + 21 + 9 = 323

Max Total Score:
390 + 287 + 323 = 1000

No. Probably the best way is to do it systematically so you don't lose track.

I actually did make an Excel chart so that I could skip around freely and not get bored playing the same puzzle over and over. You want it?

I always ended up getting 999 out of 1000 points. I did two runs through the game before deciding I'd had enough. I'm simultaneously glad to see what I missed as a kid and sort of horrified.

Wow. Since the points usually come in pairs (one hint charge plus one extra credit), I have a hard time seeing how exactly 999 is even possible.

As a kid, I was actually kind of mad that this is all we get. It takes a lot of time and effort to get to 1000 as you well know.

@shadyparadox I think on the puzzle game he/she may have missed breaking a record. If you don't break the record, you can't get any more bonus on it.

@azuritereaction I received a few times "Are you just guessing? You shouldn't be guessing." or something like that. Then I couldn't continue on with the art puzzle, and I would be kicked out of the game after a few minutes.

speaking of bugs, did you ever run into an odd bug in the room full of paintings and busts of painters where for some reason, the game would say to you in all caps something about you having cheated?

something like "CHEATERS NOT ALLOWED, ERROR CODE" or something like that, and then the entire game kicks you back out to DOS? this happened to me multiple times as a kid, i'm not sure how i could have "cheated" that room, and i'm not sure if that's the exact phrase, but it freaked me out as a kid

Yeah, I have no idea how I managed it either, and chalked it up to a bug in my version. I got 999 at least twice, so however I managed it, it was reproducable.
