sick video dude subbed, i loved it! i think you got such a violent rxn because first of all it's an exothermic rxn so it gives off a lot of heat, but also you put a LOT of water lol in my class we only put drop by drop and it gave off a ton of acetylene gas, but very cool video, gj.

Seagulls explode if they have calcium carbide... :L

@98Kestral All to do kinetics. Gotta love collision theory <3

be careful around some animals as that gas can kill them

"...which hopefully won't kill me"
hahah, made me hit the like button

@Ch3mG33k Why?Maybe he/ she commented in the aid for others. Nothing wrong with it..

CaC2 is a lot of fun! Tried making metal acetylides before?

it actually produces methane gas not acetylene

@katlynk90 Nope, it's acetylene: CaC2 + 2 H2O → C2H2 + Ca(OH)2

Calcium carbide with moisture creates corrosive calcium hydroxide. This is how you see a lot acetylene produce here (ethyne). This is a serious fire hazard compounded for the potential to inhale the gas that causes depression on the central nervous system, in addition to the fire hazard.

@29CFR1926 Was there any point to all of that or were you just stroking your e-pen0r?
Seriously, comments like this are the reason why I hate posting chemistry videos.
