Thien Thai, music by Van Cao,performed by Ban Tieng Nhac Tam Tinh-Anh Ngoc-Mai Huong-Kim Tuoc-Quynh Giao-Ha Thanh and The Quintet Of Mozart Institute Of Music in Houston.Texas @ Clear Lake University.1992
This is a ridiculously cheap show which can only cheat snobs. Should they need the music sheet for this small piece (But they look ACADEMIC, don't they)? And listen to the way they counted the rhytms together (sound like a kindengarten show). They are hyped as the best of Vietnamese singers but they did not understand the soul of this piece at all. I feel so ashamed for them that I do not want to write on!
Otherwise, the arrangement and Orchestration sound like music written for some cheap circuses. It would definitely ruin the beautiful melody. Most honest opnion, the arranger/orchestrator should go back to school to re-studying the function of harmony and its application.
The tutti chromatic sliding of the flute and strings are so poorly written and does not fit as fills within chords transition. Just setting chord progressions by misxing harmonic/melodic minor structure with pentatonic structure itself already requires careful treatments, the chromatic sliding, trills, and mediocre exercises of cliches are unnecessarily and therefore should be thrown out.
This is my honest opinion as a musician about this performance. I don't think this arranger/orchestrator really understands the core of harmony and arranging at all. The introduction of trills are so clashing and did not enrich the entrance of the main melody. The tremolo parts are so incomplete, no dynamic..sounded like a computer generated music.
