It's my long overdue first visit this year. Where are the best places to stand?

Get there nice and early (6-7am) so you can have a thorough wander around the grounds as there is LOADS to see.

by around lunch time, head to *Pheasantry Hill* so you can get a good view of the stretch of track behind the safety of some hay bales.

One word of advice though if you're not in the grand stand, BRING A MUTHA F*CKING FOLDING CHAIR, your ass would thank you for it, you'll be sitting down for a long time as the cars fly past.

how loud are F1 cars compared to say BTCC cars?

I don't personally know, but a friend who does says that F1 cars are louder than BTCC, but "DTM's hurt your head more" :P

Much better, this should serve notice to all that create car videos..........PLEASE NO MUSIC TO COVER UP THE EXHAUST SOUNDS!!!! We can hear music anytime we want, we can't hear an rare exotic car exhaust anytime we want, thats why we rely on these videos to give us that rare pleasure.

I do believe the commentator at the event knows what a Porsche Carrera GT looks like. RUF is just a tuner knock off.
