"You might have heard of this recent Jan 09 earthquake that happened in Costa Rica. Having been through a 7.1 quake in the 80's I knew that this 6.2 on the Richter scale would be trouble. Damage and human loss was minimal as reported almost immediately by various videos uploaded on Youtube, etc, but none of those videos really captures an up-close human reaction as good as this one. The close up camera angle and the clear sound is what really helps bring this alive for me I believe. There is something about the sound of an earthquake that only people who experience one in real life can probably understand, its hell. Truly brought me back to what I felt many times while I was a kid in Costa Rica. UuuFFF!

Now the funnies: the American guy is cussin' up a storm (in spanish, lol), the lady who seems to handle the spanish a lot better is actually communicating in english. Go figure.

"Calma, Calma" the man seems to get stuck saying it over and over as if trying to "calm" down the earthquake. What's interesting, this totally brought memories back of relatives who also got stuck repeating words, names, or phrases during earthquakes, in the same way they too tried to talk to the earthquake to make it go away or pray for help. Pretty crazy I think. My mother had her thing she would repeat, my cousin did too.

I will never forget. It's the most powerless feeling that I have ever felt having the floor no longer "be there" for you. For days after the event your nervous system is so shocked that your mind plays tricks on you with "fake" aftershocks, then you realize its just your mind. LOL That's until a real aftershock hit, and then your emotional recovery process had to begin all over again! Some people become very traumatized from the main quake and also the aftershocks which can sometimes continue for weeks.

Sleeping after a quake for me always became difficult as you would have serious fear of it happening to you while it was dark and you were asleep. And when it did, it was just NOT cool!

During the day you learn to keep looking for moving objects, hanging flower pots, lamps, and other things that are hanging to help reassure you that the world is not about to end.

Sorry for the long write up, this was a good one!"
