A Guttmacher Institute study found that 98% of Catholic women use birth control despite what the rules of their church. Ana Kasparian, Wes Clark and Michael Shure discuss.
What it means is that MOST CATHOLIC WOMEN DON'T AGREE WITH THE CHURCHE'S POLICY ON CONTRACEPTION, not that that they are "being hypocritical. Think woman.
@pongman.I don't understand your response. "The church can't make money without parishioners, Hence the reason they are against birth control." These two claims do not logically follow. You can't tell me there are no moral or ethical reasons associated with birth control. The Church is opposed to birth control primarily because it destroys the true end to sex in addition to making women more vulnerable to being used as objects. The Church doesn't make $ by being opposed to b.c as you implied.
@oracle2world It's not just the United States. Many European countries have high numbers of Catholics and low birthrates. And birthrates have been falling dramatically in the rest of the world partly because of increased access to contraception by women. The spread of AIDS has also been slowed in certain countries. World population growth must decrease, because at present, if everyone were to adopt our consumer lifestyle, we would need four earths to support everyone.
@oracle2world Of course! The church can't make money without parishioners, Hence the reason they are against birth control. People think the real reason for women's liberation was based on moral and ethical values. What people don't realize is that David Rockefeller funded Womens lib. for financial gain. Credit cards, car loans, paychecks, more money in his bank.
@squamish4244 - American Catholics comprise only about 6% of world Catholics. Like the Pope does not exactly focus on the recalcitrant America Catholics when there are over a billion, BILLION, more devout Catholics in the world. It only takes a couple of Duggar type families to populate the next generation with like-minded folks that breed like rabbits. The devout Catholics always out-number the wayward Catholics and the Church continues on. I don't know why folks make this complicated.
@pongman - to make more little catholics. The Shakers practiced celibacy, there are no more Shakers. Catholics and Mormons encourage large families, there are lots of Catholics and Mormons. Nothing to do with dogma or right or wrong. Just sheer numbers. I mean, when folks claim to believe in the Theory of Evolution, do they fully understand that whoever breeds the most critters for the next generation "wins"?
@fcfqb- the Catholic church is not totally against using forms of birth control to help with "other womanly stuff" such as heavy periods, however when you are using it solely to prevent pregnancy that is where they disagree. I agree with you, sex is a wonderful thing and it is intended to be. However, these "rules" are put in place to protect woman and men from being treated as objects and to increase sexual intimacy. This is not a "punishment" for women.
