"Der Evangelimann" by Wilhelm Kienzl (1857-1941):
The most famous part of the forgotten opera "Der Evangelimann" (1895), based on an authentic story:

3. Scene:
Enter Mathias L.H. aged somewhat, with long and rueful countenance in shabby semi-clerical attire, with a black straw hat. A large book under his right arm.
Mathias: "Now blest be the Lord Jesus".
Magdalena: "Forevermore, Amen!"
Mathias advances; opens the book and proceeds to read:
"Blest are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for they shall have their place in heav'n, for they shall have their place in heav'n. Blest are ye when men shall persecute and revile you and all things evil shall falsely utter against you for my name's sake, Rejoice then and be glad. For your reward is great in Heav'n. Blest are they who are persecuted. For the sake of righteousness. For they shall have their place in heav'n, for they shall have their place in heav'n".
Mathias in a friendly tone, quoting from Bible. The children toddle shyly towards him:
"Let little children come to me. The Holy word of God I'll teach you! So sing after me!"
Singing:
"Blest are they who are persecuted".
Some children singing after him:
"Blest are they, blest are they"
Repeating: "perse-"
Children: "who are persecuted".
Mathias:"That's right! Now let's repeat what we have sung just now. For the sake of righteousness".
Children singing after him: "For the sake of righteousness".
Magdalena: " How sweet it sounds!"
Mathias joining in: "Blest are they who are persecuted. For the sake of righteousness. Can one of you continue?"
Soprano: " I can! For they shall have their place in heav'n".
Mathias "Who can say the rest? Now once more! That's right!"
Magdalena:"Just see, the gentleman has taught you all. I'll join in also!"
Mathias: "Now we'll repeat it all! ...."

Thanks !

  • Always magnificent moment with Fliegner, this link with Tölzer is significant.

  • Thank you for sharing it

  • Christian Fliegner is a lifetime star in GSG's crown. Bravi tutti!

  • Der Christian Fliegner ist ja als Tenor noch besser als damals als Sopran! Schade nur für ihn, daß sein einstiges Lockenköpchen so früh schon voll der Alopecie zum Opfer gefallen ist ;)

  • Thank you for sharing this wonderful video. It is always good to hear Tolzer singing as they perform very well.

  • Magnificent performance of the Toëlzer! Thanks Surrexit
