If the enemy is allowed full control any advance toward him in daylight will be penalized by heavy loss. Therefore the attacker resorts to various expedients to circumvent or nullify the enemy's defensive fires. An attack screened by darkness or fog is one method that may accomplish this end. A skillful utilization of covered approaches is another. But often the situation or the terrain precludes any of these methods. Then must the enemy's fire be beaten down by our fire if we are to advance.
