This video segment of my first vacation in 8.1 years involves an interesting chance encounter of a ship passing under a rising bridge. I've never seen a ship that big outside TV, not even close. My home area isn't near any substantial amount of water (the nearest lake is 12 miles (19 km) away, the big lake 50 miles (80 km)) so I don't get to see anything beyond sailboats and the occasional pontoon, tiny in comparison to this ship, which stretches probably 800 feet long. Here, you can watch the ship pass by, the bridge lower, and cars start to travel over it again. Although I'd have taken the sound out, I wanted you to know what I mean by the wind drowning the sound out. You can't really hear much of anything on what's going on sound wise because of the wind.

  • Ulillillia when was the last time you went on a vacation? I think it would do you good to get out and see new things.

  • Sep 21, 2008 was the last day and I haven't been on one since. There's nothing in the forecast right now for any future vacations. Prior to this, it was July or August of 2000... 8.1 years ago.

  • How fast was the ship going in pixels for frame Ulilililia?

  • In the real world, "pixels per frame" is an invalid unit of measure - there are no frames in the real world (perhaps, though, it may be 5.8E-44 of a second, Planck Time). When referencing a monitor, even this varies. The solution, in a sense, is around 1E-41 meter or something, essentially nothing and something too fine for technology to measure, even for the laws of physics. In mph, it was more around 3 mph (walking speed; 1.4 m/s mental conversion) as it passed nearest to me.

  • I live in Duluth, this isn't a chance encounter, these ships are coming and going all the time, especially in the warmer seasons. Glad to see you enjoyed your time in our city; I've read your site off-and-on for a while, was surprised to check up on your account and see you had visited here!

  • For us, it was a chance encounter. It was the only day that we were going to Duluth, and at the time, it was the only ship that was going that day.

  • The videos are still better with this kind of disorderly noise instead of no sound at all, if you ask me.

  • that was close

  • @ulillillia That was a joke, Uli.

  • This is so much better because it looks like you're from the 70's.

  • It's much better without the glitch the camera has with video recording. I have a few photos on my site that show the true color version (or, at least, something close to true color).
