The IBM 1401 was an mainframe computer back in the 60's. It was this huge beast of a machine that had a small flaw in which it leaked electromagnetic radiation in a frequency that AM radios could pick up. It didn't take long for the geeks of the day to figure out how to make music out of it! That wierd instrument you hear at the start that sounds kinda like a claironet but isn't... that the 1401!

After hearing this on Charlie Brooker's Newswipe, I've been looking for it for months... Thanks. ^_^

@Devialx10 Me too, very poignant video. The definition for poignant: Adjective: Evoking a keen sense of sadness or regret: "a poignant reminder". Keenly felt: "the sensation was most poignant in winter". And keen: Adjective: Having or showing eagerness or enthusiasm. Verb: Wail in grief for a dead person; sing a keen. Noun: An Irish funeral song accompanied by wailing in lamentation for the dead. Synonyms:adj. sharp, acute, trenchant, eager, piercing, intense verb. lament Sounds about right.

Beautiful piece of music, thank you for the upload. I would say it makes me feel empathetic for the machine, if that makes sense?

Nice concept, too bad it isn't the actual sound of an IBM 1401.

Au contraire, it´s very much based on the sound of an actual IBM 1401. Read the essay on ausersmanual (dot) org (slash) data

@NTOVReykjavik As you said, it is "based on the sound of" an 1401, but it is not the 'found sound' of one.

@glun There are actual recordings of an IBM 1401 computer used in the piece, which were recorded by Jóhann´s dad in the early 70´s. Read the full story on ausersmanual(dot)org(slash)data.
