When the umpire pays the goal, I love the reaction. Total rubbish.

haha wtf was that he played on after the siren and got a free kick what the hell.

It still gives me heart palpitations when I look at it. I was fortunate enough to get in perfect position quickly, right underneath the flight of the ball as it sailed towards the goal. From where I was standing, it was just inside the goal post. Had I been out of position it would have been difficult to call.
A great game overall, played in good spirits by both teams. It will make for an interesting rematch in the next International Cup!

Forget the 25 metre people !!! ANyone notice just how SOFT the original free was. I can only assume it was for holding, but the RSA guy had the ball when tackled and actually DROPPED IT. That should have been a free to Ireland ! He kicked it on the half volley, so it is incorrect disposal. He was held for half second after he dropped it so I fail to see how it could have been holding the man. Let alone the farcical situation that transpires after that. Ireland were ROBBED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of my good mates is the goal umpire in the clip. Small world, huh?

The mark from the free looks to be a few meters to the goal side of the center square. When you first see the Irish man on the mark, he is over the line of the center square. You see him about the same time as the South African played on. It stands to reason that the Irish player was over the mark before the South African deviated from his line. Correct call by the umpire. Confusing finish. Congratulations, South Africa. Better luck next time, Ireland.

i was there :D
umm he played on but the umpire hadnt called play on yet
and
the rules say that the man on the mark can not come closer UNLESS the umpire calls play on
he ran over before he called play on
so it was the right decision
Hmmm, it's back again. As you were...

I don't know why this video is "no longer available" - perhaps Telstra / Bigpond mistakenly thought we didn't have permission for it.

Unfortunately the footage doesn't show the man on the mark at the exact moment he plays on. But by the book it doesn't actually matter - as imposterdale says, he can't overstep the mark until the umpire calls player on, which he doesn't appear to have done. So technically it is a 25m penalty regardless of what the South African did. But in terms of what feels fair, it would be nice to see if he overstepped first - when the footage comes back to him he's certainly over where the free was paid.
