algebra trinomials seeking clarification -2x^2 5x 3
I know that my videos may be flawed in some way! I know I rush sometimes and make errors. I know that I'm missing arrows and
pointers. I know that you can't see my hand! For egregious errors please tell me and I'll try to get to the corrections. If
you can do better, please, do so! Publish!
Myself, I'm looking for a teaching job. If you know of a school that can use an English teacher with particular training
skills, please let me know.
If you agree with Lockhardt http://www.maa.org/devlin/LockhartsLament.pdf then you will find ways to make math more art like
and, almost automatically, more agreeable. Unfortunately, with classes of 35:1 or 40:1 teaching is more about crowd control
than teaching. And further, I've yet to find any evidence of Lockhardt putting his criticism to work in anything other than
idealized situations.
Unfortunately, it has proven quite difficult to find much support on the web for math 'doing stuff'. Most of the math
exercises found in text books and on the web appear to be not much more than pushing symbols around. If you can suggest ways
that math is applied I would very much appreciate your help!
If you're studying for a big exam in math or science, nothing brings your study partners into the mix like publishing. Make
new smart friends. ;)
If you or anyone you knows how to 'do something' especially in math or science... publish that knowledge electronically.
Point a web cam at a piece of paper while they solve an abstract problem or use a Livescribe Pulse pen, they're pretty good
too. Tablets and tablet PCs are great as well. Just get their knowledge published!
Some may argue that publishing what you know diminishes the value of your knowledge. I would argue that the more people know
the more valuable your insights into those problems!
What a great way to get white collar criminals (usually college graduates) helping pay their dues to society... require them
to publish their knowledge as a community service to benefit all. The criminal's misdeed cost X to the community. Then have
that criminal publish X number of hours of education at the current community college rate. (Backwards looking teachers will
say something about losing jobs... those are the same teachers that once locked up books in libraries.)The community then
evaluates the value of that person's contributions electronically and decides if the debt has been paid or not.
How about getting our seniors to recall their training and publish that? Have you seen 'old school' math exams? They were
much harder in some ways than today's tests!
The world needs more math and science like never before. Frankly speaking, hard problems require better problem solvers.
Sample list of problems:
Rational discourse with fellow human beings: logic and math
How to make more efficient transportation: engineering
Better tasting more nutritious less resource intensive food: biology
Efficient storage and transmission of energy: engineering
End of life threatening disease: biology and chemistry
Bio-fuels: sciences across the board
Cure for cancer: chemistry and biology
Toxic waste in soil, air and water: all sciences
(Feel free to add to the list in comments below.)
The point being, there are not enough educated people to solve our numerous and thorny problems. Too many people sit on their
hands and complain that something needs to be done. Here is my solution: you, the intelligent viewer, share your science
based intelligence with us. Please spare the world of more hyperbole and useless name calling of opponents to your ideas.
If you know of anyone who knows more about math, chemistry, bio-chemistry, physics, engineering, or any of the sciences then
try to get them on video showing how they solve problems. Call it their community service without the hassle of going to a
classroom... if they are unwilling, then guilt them into by it by pointing out how miserable the world is today and all the
bigger problems that need better problem solvers. Make the simple connection of 'better education equals better jobs means
better life'.
We can make a better world through more and better and free education for all.
The state of the quality of public education (and the world!) is now in _your_ hands.
