Yes, the upbeatness is irony... like the song Mr. Me, from Lincoln, with the triumphant musical ending coupled with the lyrics "he ended up sad... he ended up really, really, really sad."

this gets more awesome every time I watch it.

Excellent.. I've seen a few bad movies to this tune.. this is perfect

Dang, I was just looking through CDs at B&N a few hours ago, too. Ah well. NEXT TIME!

This is awesome. It makes me want to watch old movies like that. And this song is such a gem in the rough! Is it on any albums?

It's on They Might Be Giants' latest album, The Else. It's rather a gem in a great big pile of gems. :) I highly suggest going and buying a copy. Almost every song is an absolute hit!

The music sounds a bit to happy even though the film is known to be a sad but a 'horror' story of a movie. I grew up with TMBG back in the 80's so I'm not dissing their music but it would've been dark if anybody seen the movie.

I read somewhere -- I can't recall where -- that the general idea was that the more upbeat a TMBG song sounds, the more of a downer it is when you listen carefully to the lyrics, while the more serious-sounding songs are light-hearted ditties in disguise. I've done no comprehensive analysis but generally find that the principle holds. :)
