Actually, you've got it the wrong way round.
Story I heard was that Brian May's son was a Star Fleet fan, and had it on one morning when his father came down. May heard the tune and fell in love with it then and there, and that's how his version came to be.
That said, I have to agree; it was a kick-ass single, and I have it on vinyl.
