  • Very nicely done comparison. But, I would have liked some room tone so I could compare the noise levels. Just a couple of seconds of no talking for each test would have been awesome.

  • @fogliftersf Good point. The camera settings were not touched throughout the entire recording, so only one room tone clip would be necessary. Let me know if you want me to send a clip to you...

  • The problem is there is a gain mismatch. The Rode seems to have higher gain, which may appear as better quality but is not. It would help to get them at the same gain and test them like that, otherwise the change in gain makes it nearly imposible to sense actually quality difference.

  • thanks for the video ;)

  • the Rode sound is much deeper than the Sennheiser

  • I couldn't help but crack up at the end. Nice Comparison!

  • Well done, very helpfull....

  • @scarce10 Yes, as Johnny Carson used to say, "You are correct." I had at the end, comparing the two through separate channels of a high-end headphones. If you notice, it doesn't state how much gain or loss the MKE has. I suspect it is eight while Rode gives ten. Also I think that the MKE starts at around 3 to 4 Db less then the Rode. With the MKE you get a "balanced" sound with the Rode giving more bass gain. I think the MKE gives a better sound but the Rode makes voices "POP".

  • I think overall it could go to the sennheiser. Granted it's quieter, but it sounds clear at all distances, in real world application you could just tweak your preamp when using the sennheiser at farther distances.

  • I think both mics are not that wonderful but if I was going to have a ref mic to help sync to a 2nd system I would probably use the Rode just because it seems to boost the sound for the distant shots. If I was to do close up interview type of videos the Sennheiser seems less boomy and flatter.

  • which one is better?

  • Great comparison. Have a panasonic sd700 and need an external mic. Think I will be going with the rode pro. Just seems to have the fuller sound. Thanks
