Stephanie Trick plays her stride version of Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag.

This was at the 2009 West Coast Ragtime Festival in Sacramento, California.

The "freeware" video encoder I had turned out not to be freeware at all, so I'm trying a different conversion process. It seems to be OK in terms of not having jagged edges, but the movements seem a little less fluid. The audio should remain 44.1kHz @ 384 kbps.

  • God damn I would put money that Ms. Trick doesn't have an improvisational bone in her body. This is so goddamn rehearsed. Hell, I hope she keeps fooling into thinking she can improvise because amurrrrican can't seem to tell either way.

  • @evifnoskcaj There's no fooling involved. She makes no secret that she meticulously works through and polishes her performances well ahead of time. She may envy the improvisational players, but the improvisational players envy her technical skill. It's all good.

  • By far the best and most talented player in any of these ragtime festivals. I'm in love......

  • And she's only 23. She had the privilege of playing a duet with Neville Dickie that weekend, who commented, "I didn't play like that 'til I was 54!"

Check out her YouTube channel "stephtrick" and you'll find a couple videos of her playing Bach on a pipe organ.

  • This really swings...did she come up with this...it is fantastic! *****

  • @idasynco Yes, she said she came up with this after listening to many other stride versions, so there are influences from many other people in there.

  • I dig it!

  • @Keeper1st Yeah, without improvisation, she's performing out of style and is making it unmusical and turning it into muscle memory. I just find it hilarious that she talks about the importance of improvisation in the style but doesn't actually do it.

  • 4 people never heard a piano played before.

  • Jelly roll morton would like you

  • your style and temp make me happy

  • How can this not bring a smile to your face?

  • WANT TO BONE

  • Its just getting better and better :D
