I just got the same exact motor and cant get her started.

I love this motors i,ve got the same from 1967 but then a 3hp runs nice but i hate the start system!! they would,ve been thinking better if they built it just on the top of the flywheel i mean rubber to metal? c,mon!!

My little 4hp was doing the same thing, smoking like that. It was definitely caused by too much oil to gas ratio. I believe I had it accidentally at a 16:1 ratio and I am pretty sure these should be at about 50:1.

yea they use 50:1 I think the fuel I used was 24:1 and it was cold out.

i do have the 71 model you need to fix your mixture it seems to be running rough

Its all tuned up now. That was the fist time that motor was started in more than 25 years. I checked the gear oil put it in a can and started it . I was suprised it ran at all . It runs like new now.

I wish they would have left the throttle control on the front like the old 3 hp motors.
