Romsey Abbey tenor bell (just over 1 ton) being swung in the restored bellframe to test for frame-movement. This takes place in the bellhangers' workshop at Appleton, Oxon.

The bell was cast by Thomas Mears I of Whitechapel, London, in 1791.

WARNING: Ringing a bell by the method shown can be very dangerous if not done in exactly the correct way. This should only be done by someone who has been fully trained to do so.

  • They tuned the bell... I find, that's not very good...

  • What makes you say that? Have you heard it? It's much improved on how it used to be (in my opinion)...

  • In Germany is it not allowed to tune old bells...

  • It varies here, depending on the age and founder. Bells of this age (not considered that old) by this founder are plentiful. It it was a bell older than, say, 1650, or by a rare founder, it wouldn't be allowed to have any tuning.

  • Sound??

  • Yes - very. It's now been welded...

  • che fresada!!

  • I think you'll find it does move.

  • well he mentions to the fact that any bell above 100 years is protected in Germany, including a bann for any tuning, except the office for historical monuments gives it´s okay for it (happens quite rarely)

there are many different opinions about ``to tune or not to tune`` I suppose, for bells hung for change ringing or carillons it may be different than for swinging bells

    looks like good work anyway!

  • we done this at my tower once, it was done on our tenor because the clapper was faulty, we had to leave it in, my got it was loud
