Graham Hughes, the world's most travelled filmmaker, offers his expert advice on how to travel the world on a shoestring budget.

When asked how can I afford to travel so much, I feel like retorting with: how can you afford your rent? To keep a dog? To have children? To smoke? I have no rent to pay, no dog to feed, no kids to look after or cigarette companies to support, so 100% of the money I have can go on travel. Keeping to a budget of $15 a day is fairly easy if you're CouchSurfing (free), eating street food ($2 a meal) and travelling on the chicken bus ($10 per 100 miles). That's just $5500 a year -- less than a typical British cigarette smoker will spend on fags over the same period and much, much less than the rent on a squalid little flat in London or the cost of bringing up children.

"The toughest part of travel is deciding to go."

Travel isn't a question of being loaded, it's a question of priorities. Obviously if you want comfort and security, stay at home, work hard and maybe go on a cruise when you're 67 years old. If you're lucky enough to live that long. But if you want to see the world, rush headlong into the thrill and vigour of the unknown, wake up every day in a new place with new challenges and new friends, then the world is your dancefloor -- all you have to do is make the decision to GET OUT THERE and strut your funky stuff.

  • I'm from the UK and I'm about to go round the world... which bank charges the least commision with debit cards??

  • @edward101277 Apparently, Nationwide is the best account to get. Failing that, a HSBC Premier account doesn't charge to take money out of foreign cash machines (aside from the charges of the foreign bank), but it costs 12 quid a month so you might not want to go for that option.

  • Had a few queries about the around the world flights for less than a grand: just change 'dot' to '.'

  • I'm surprised you haven't combined numbers 16 and 17. There's no need to bring a laptop when you can just bring around an unlocked iPhone. With an unlocked iPhone, you'll have a GPS, compass, skype, a camera, the internet, and most importantly: a usable phone. Did I mention when you unlock the phone you can get apps for free? ;)

A laptop is too expensive/heavy/fragile to bring. A journal could replace the laptop as far as writing goes. Just borrow your hosts computer when you're couch surfing!

  • @geoffbo312 That's a good point Geoff, but I've got an iPod Touch and it drives me up the frikkin' wall! The pdf reader is sooooooo slow (and painfully difficult to upload to on the road), the wi-fi signal is weaker than Walter The Softy and it turns its nose up at flash - meaning I can't see half the bloomin' internet!! Oh, and they are IMPOSSIBLE to type up your blog on unless you have weird tiny pointy fingers.

A nice, light, durable notebook is no problem to take with! Trust me!

  • I never understood the point of travelling. Meeting people does not interest me and travelling thousands of miles to looking at something just because is weird

  • Subway is definitely not the cheapest in Norway, check out the Shawarma Mix at a shop in Oslo called Marmaris. Is the best fast food and the cheapest. Even less if you are a student;)

  • i want to do this soo bad it looks amazing!! im 19 but too scared to do it! dont know where to start and what about money??

  • @edward101277 i'd guess its a bit late now but check out Metro Bank!

  • you must be proud of your passport!!

  • @1337Creations I never said he had to do anything, I just wished there was a video like this in American terms/values. I didn't complain or tell anyone to do anything! You're just being rather rude, probably due to misunderstanding where I was coming from.

  • @SemiLesbo 600 quid is 750 dollars roughly. And why should he. He's british/Irish. Why should he be forced to use american terms.

You should brush up on your understandings of the rest of the world.

  • So you've told us how to save money. But how do you make money. I want to try it as a chef since that's what i've been doing the past years. Work from country to country.

  • Why do you have lonely on the tag? If you wanna you could always manifest a friend or a lovely romantic travel partner if it's what you want.

  • Awesome video !
