They danced by the roadside on Saturday night,
And the laughter resounded to left and to right,
With shouts of "Hip, hip!" and of "Hey!"
Nils Utterman, the fiddler's daft young sprig,
Sat there with his bagpipes and played them a jig.
With doodely, doodely, day!
verse 1 translation by Charles Wharton Stork

The lyric uses an old form of swedish and that makes it har to translate, but basicly the song describes a country dance that takes place in the summer some time during the last century. He sings about what happens and that ppl that are there. Its a naive and somewhat romatic description of a swedish summer night and so on and so forth...
Hope it helps :)
