This is the Dove Awards performance with the "infamous" ending. Within weeks of this, Kurt Young was replaced by Ernie Haase. Kurt sang only a few months with the Cathedrals and I actually got to see them in concert with him once. Kurt seemed to excel more on smooth, silky songs, but the group was still staging songs from their "Symphony of Praise", "Goin' In Style", and "I've Just Started Living" projects that they recorded with Danny Funderburk, who was more of a power tenor. Unfortunately, this didn't play well to Mr. Young's strengths. This lineup did not make any audio recordings while they were together.

Group Members: Kurt Young, Glen Payne, Mark Trammell, George Younce, Roger Bennett

  • Hi Volscot. I remember watching this when it first aired & was upset upon hearing how out of balance Kurt's volume was compared to the other members. Aside from Kurt's unfortunate flub ending, the sound person didn't do the Cat's any justice. It would be nice to give Kurt some positive publicity so I would like to know if you plan on posting Kurt's "This Old House" performance & his other 2 songs that you mentioned having on your NN video. Thank you for posting the really good music!!

  • I absolutely plan to post the NN performances. I'm just not sure how long it will take me to get to them. The other two songs are "In The Depths Of The Sea" & "I've Just Started Living".

BTW, I really enjoy the 2 Priority cassettes that I own that feature Kurt.

  • Kurt's voice wasn't used to the Cat's schedule, either. If I recall, prior to joining the Cathedrals, Kurt had sung with a trio whose style was more like the Booth Brothers, and whose schedule was probably nowhere near as rigorous as the Cat's.

  • Kurt sang with Priority before joining the Cats. They may have been a trio at one time, but they were a quartet on the two cassettes that I own. Your stylistic comparison to the Booths is accurate.

  • I would rather listen to Kurt Young's voice crack all day, than to listen to the music of the world.

  • fbcwpastor....im sure u like the guys, as jake hess said, to just "clump up"...but im a 17 year old and i love the energy Ernie brings with his group...im sorry ud just prefer them to stand and sing..but George Younce loved it...and he knows quartet music...dancing doesnt hurt anything so dont talk about Ernie Haase's dancing...its perfectly ok to move around a lil bit...

  • Kurt is a really good singer, he just had a bad night at the awards. every singer has bad days. Search Kurt's version of "At the Cross" or "He Left It All"

  • check out heritage singing this song..... and at least you can hear it......SDA

  • But notice that Kurt does eventually hit that note at the end. Just missed it coming in. The fact that he found a way around hitting this note this way after this just shows he wasn't a bad singer.

  • Everyone who keeps busting on Kurt Young needs to check out the Singing Americans 2010 NQC Reunion set. Check out Gloryroad @ 7:43....much worse than Kurt's note. Give the guy a break, it's been over 20 years. He had a really nice voice and was just singing higher than he should have been. Which, by the way, is mostly the Cats fault for not lowering the keys a little. No one but SG geeks would have known the difference. And I'm one of the biggest Cathedral fans out there!

  • We miss you Roger Bennett, George Younce, and Glen Payne! They were great.

  • That ending was beautiful. Sounds like you kicked a walrus.

  • Wow poor Kurt he's probably embarrassed...

  • WOW no wander Kurt was replaced!! that note hurt my ears haha still an awesome song though!

  • Hey at the end of this video kurts voice sounds like my lawnmower when it backfires.

  • @RedCeltYank1. When Ernie was with the cathedrals you didn't see him jumpin around and doin a "train" and showboatin then. George and the gang would've told him where to go. Dancing in the spirit is one thing, Receiving a blessing from the lord and showing it is one thing, but the crap they do on stage is a show and I think it's a joke. Looks like a buncha monkeys dancing around. You couldn't pay me enough money to go see them. The young kids like that garbage cuz they don't know any better.
