Learn how to pick the right ink color for tattoo designs from the experts at Area 51 in this Howcast tattoo video.

Hi, my name is Chris 51. I specialize in what I like to call "Hyper Realism Tattooing". And my name is Joshua South. I'm the head instructor here at Area 51 in Springfield, Oregon. To find out more information, visit a51tats.com. Let's talk tattoos.

Let's talk tattoos. Ink color selection is something that should be done prior to the tattoo application. Make your artist aware of your desires for ink colors because he might not agree with you. Yes, it's your tattoo, and yes, you may decide on what colors you want, but you also got to remember, a tattoo artist is trained in color theory, understands how complementary colors work with each other, how background colors work with the initial image. So, sit down, talk with your artist about ink colors.

A veteran artist is trained on the approaches of each aspect of art, whether it's color, shading, lighting, shadowing, all of these things that you might not have personally thought of, he thinks of every single day of his life. So sit down with him, really talk about the colors. Listen to what he has to say. You can probably still use a lot of the colors you want, but he's going to offer ideas that are really going to help the design flow together better, as a more complete tattoo, as a more complete work of art.
