In 1936 the American Standards Association recommended that the A above middle C be tuned to 440 Hz.[1] This standard was taken up by the International Organization for Standardization in 1955 (reaffirmed by them in 1975) as ISO 16.

In our "standard tuning", we end up with the following frequencies for the notes:
A# / Bb =58.27hz (and 116.54, 233.08, 466.16, 932.32, etc)
B / Cb = 61.735hz (and 123.47, 246.94, 493.88, 987.76, etc)

yet our electrical system is "tuned" in disharmony with these notes. Our Alternating Current = 60hz (upper harmonics at 120, 240, 480, 960, etc)

AC-powered appliances can give off a characteristic hum, often called "mains hum", at the multiples of the frequencies of AC power that they use. It is usually produced by motor and transformer core laminations vibrating in time with the magnetic field. This hum can also be evident in poorly-constructed audio amplifiers, where the power supply is inadequately filtered.

Why not tune to the electrical grid? I propose we change the tuning standard so that our B or Bb is tuned to the 60hz hum. Until then all music made with electric means will be in disharmony with itself.

Would you like to know what harmony sounds like? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1-CWYv7jQI if you don't notice a difference, that's ok because it only has an effect on subconscious and physical levels over time and should not be consciously noticable

  • around 0:55 I ask why did they choose 60hz as the cycle for the alternating current?

  • during 0:21 ish you can clearly hear the guitar's "B string" now tuned to between Bb and B appear to be practically in unison with the harmonics of the hum

  • at the very beginning you can hear our "correctly tuned" B's going against the hum, and around :04 ish you can hear my guitar swing down a tiny bit into the hum. at that point my tuner reads in between Bb and B, although you can't see it. I've recorded 3 tunes since with the correction. I will post them soon!

  • Please put up a video with the new tuning. When you hit that b note to tune to at the end i think that was in 440

  • Dude you are brilliant! i totally believeve what you are saying. Your in tune man! God bless you! id heard about this. im thinking about doing these tunings. Crazy stuff!

  • looking to see transcendental suite played in president Ronald Wilson Reagans time using A chord over middle C chord on a piano where the string was actually broken by the harmonizing of two dischords
