This video provides background on a project, coordinated by the Environmental Management Authority, to begin replanting approximately 1300 hectares of land deforested by illegal farmers in the Nariva Swamp in Trinidad and Tobago.
The re-planting exercise is being executed entirely by residents of the villages of Plum Mitan and Kernahan over a five year period. The World Bank has provided grant funding to develop the reforestation plan, hydrology studies, a social impact assessment and the remote sensing of greenhouse gas emissions.
This exercise is in keeping with the National Environmental Policy (NEP), pursuant to the requirements of the Environmental Management Act (2000), which contains a mandate to conserve and enhance natural ecosystems that serve as sinks or reservoirs of greenhouse gases such as forests and coastal ecosystems.
