Petition for CTA Bus Line # 2- Cermak Reroute
November 26, 2010

Office of Alderman Daniel Solís (25th Ward) 2439 S. Oakley Avenue Chicago, IL 60608 Re: Petition for CTA bus line # 21- Cermak Reroute

Dear Mr. Daniel Solís and Mr. Richard Rodríguez:

We are asking both of you to reroute CTA bus line #21 on Cermak Road in order to create a bus stop and a bus shelter in the corner of Morgan and 21st Street. This bus stop and bus shelter will better serve the needs of patients of Alivio Medical Center, and families in the community, particularly the needs of senior citizens and people with disabilities living in Casa Maravilla, Casa Morelos, and Casa Guerrero.

Almost all the senior citizens living in Casa Maravilla depend on the CTA bus #21 to go to the grocery store, the bank, visit their, families and enjoy the city amenities.  Many patients of Alivio Medical Center depend on this bus route to receive essential medical services at the clinic.

Between Ashland Avenue and Halsted Street, Cermak Road is very much an industrial corridor that brings high speed traffic, much of which is from commercial trucks and large trailer trucks (or 18 wheelers).  After dusk, this area is quite dark and desolate.  The closest CTA bus stop, located on Morgan Street and Cermak Road, is two blocks south from the clinic and the apartment buildings. This bus stop is dangerous for community residents because it requires them to compete with this industrial traffic.  This difficult access to public transportation is a great barrier for residents to have a livable community in Pilsen.

Due to their physical challenges seniors citizens and patients (especially children and pregnant women) take on an added hardship by the walk of the two blocks and, if necessary, crossing Cermak Road to get to and from the current CTA bus stop at Morgan Street. This is an enormous physical challenge for them, particularly during the cold winter season.

Access to public transportation for people of all ages is an essential component of livable communities in our city. We, residents of the Pilsen community and patients of Alivio Medical Center, count on the commitment of both of you to work with us to create the bus stop and the bus shelter that we need so that CTA Bus route # 21 may better serve our needs.
