Republic of Užice: The Republic of Užice (often written with parentheses "Republic of Užice"; Serbo-Croatian: Užička Republika, Ужичка република) was a short-lived liberated Yugoslav territory organized as a military mini-state that existed in the autumn of 1941 in Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia, more specifically the western part of Serbia. The Republic was established by the Partisan resistance movement and its administrative center was in the town of Užice.
The Republic of Užice comprised almost all of western Serbia and had a population of more than 300,000 people. It was located between the line Valjevo-Bajina Bašta in the north, the river Drina in the west, the river Zapadna Morava in the east, and the Sandžak region in the south.
The government was made of "people's councils" (odbors), and the Communists opened schools and published a newspaper, Borba (meaning "Struggle"). They even managed to run a postal system and around 145 km of railway and operated an ammunition factory from the vaults beneath the bank in Užice.
In November 1941, in the so-called first offensive, the German troops occupied this territory again, while the majority of Partisan forces escaped towards Bosnia, Sandžak and Montenegro, re-grouping at Foča in Bosnia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic...

The most memorable parts of the movie are the ones with the kid, there were many orphans whose parents were killed during war and many of them joined partisans, perhaps the best movie about such kids is Bosko Buha, already full movie on the youtube, based on a true story...Bosko Buha became icon and part of postwar Yugoslav mythology about WW2 liberation war.
There is an article on Wikipedia, historically correct, about Bosko Buha. Short but neat. Movie Bosko Buha was loosely based on life and death of Bosko, but also it tells story of other heroic kids that served in the same unit with Bosko...
My father told this story many times when we were kids. Captured partisans have to guess at which the officer's eyes were made of glass. Guessed right - would SS-officer NOT torture them or shoot them immediately. The boy guesses correctly. And when the SS-officer asked how the boy could guess correct - said partisan boy: "The glass-eye is the only human at you!"
