West Virginia Coal Miners represent a unique heritage. In light of the recent mine explosion in Raleigh County, we pray for those who didn't make it out alive and for those who may never make it out at all.

Our miners have endured tough times and tougher conditions to put food on the tables of so many West Virginians. To my knowledge, the gentleman at the end of the video is Martin Toler--one of those who didn't come home after the Sago Mine incident.

My daddy worked in the coal mines for 22 years. He was a miner, certified welder, certified electrician and a tipple boss for the mines in those years. He only went to the 8th grade. Not because he dropped out, but because back then, that was as high as the school went that was close enough for him to attend. Nonetheless, he has accomplished a lot in his lifetime, and still holds those certifications today. College doesn't make any man better than another. It never has, and it never will.

@danielwvu Guarantee you wouldn't have the balls to tell me that to my face. If you don't like coalmining, go home, open your breaker box (if you know what that is, and shut it off) that will solve your coal problem. My dad went through 3 colleges and a trade school to be a coalminer and is not manager of maintenance of operations. He fixes everything. I'd love to know what you could too that would make you smarter than him. Let's hope it doesn't involve electricity!

Where in the bible it says its okay to kill people for jobs? go to ohvec.org and click on the health link.MTR is murder not mining.Maria was one of the ones that help to set up the anonymous call in number for miners complaints.She worked with leaders in DC in MSHA to help do this,what did you do?These men died in horrendous fear for their lives and Maria their suppose enemy stood up for them. As the ones that should care we too failed these men.Maria Gunnoe loves many coal miners get it right!

Beautiful video. I acknowledge the history and deep roots that coal mining has in the life and times of West Virginians and others. Like soldiers, this pays tribute to those who have provided a service and sacrifice for fellow Americans. I challenge all Americans to demand cleaner energy and the cleanest possible coal operations, so that we can prevent entities like Massey Coal and Big Coal at large from allowing unnecessary deaths due to negligence and mountaintop removal coal mining.

@danielwvu Well, considering the fact that you have a lot everybody pissed off at you, it's hard to tell who you were talking to. Coal mining is one of the hardest jobs on earth! While you are up in your Air conditioned office building, REAL men are underground providing electricity for America. I don't know why you are calling coal mining an unskilled job, while you sit on your lazy ass all say in an office building. Coal miners risk their life to earn a buck, and you sit down at a desk all day
