@DemonfireNinja it wont go in movie maker, idiot.

Look, do you want to know the easiest way to convert MKV files into whatever file type you want?
It is so simple, just open the MKV in windows live movie maker, then save it as a wmv file, from there you can use any basic converter to make it whatever file format you want.
I know, I felt stupid after spending an entire day on the internet trying to figure this out when it was this simple.

@AR1KR The video compression was probably set to uncompressed. You can change that by going to Video > Compression (or Ctrl+P) and select a codec you desire.

thank u very much, works just fine =)

I can't open it on Virtual dub.

Any way to get this to convert with the subtitles?

if your missing the color RED from the new AVI file add pixel_type="RGB" to the .AVS file.
FOR EXAMPLE: DirectShowSource("Drive Letter:\Folder\video.mkv", pixel_type="RGB", convertfps=true, fps=23.976)

@StraleStrah I believe there is an easier way. Try Xilisoft Video Converter... It converts videos with only a few clicks of the mouse :-)

I am sure there is an easier way.
Is any version of VirtualDub ok to use? or do you need to use a certain version?
