We know their dream; enough
To know they dreamed and are dead.
And what if excess of love
Bewildered them till they died?
I write it out in a verse --
MacDonagh and MacBride
And Connolly and Pearse
Now and in time to be,
Wherever green is worn,
Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.

-- William Butler Yeats.

  • Brits still deny their colonialism yet they keep their monarchy. They would be better off and respected if they got rid of the stinking royalty. Then the British empire would be gone, now it is a financial empire. Don't fool yourselves into thinking these people have no power. Corporations which began in Britain and the Netherlands joined forces in 1700 with the monarchy of William of Orange. That is what really changed the face of England for the worse.Just follow the money.

  • No Englishman should try and defend the actions of the British here. But no Irish man should use this as a reason to hate the English either. It is nearly a century ago now, the British Empire is gone, colonialism is a thing of the past. Today's English man is completely detached from this. It's history.

  • @VeritasEngine Easter 1916, almost a century ago. Completely detached from it now.Get the fuck over it to be honest.

  • @Debz1990 Don't get me wrong, it doesn't invalidate Ireland's scars but unfortunately too many people take one-sided, ignorant views like yours on board.Fine, be bitter, but modern colonialism was a European thing. Before that it was done by Ancient empires. But oh, the English specifically are to blame for it all? Also, present text?British Empire is a thing of the past,as is colonialism.

  • @Debz1990 So the wars of the world are the direct fault of the English? What? So there'd be world peace if it wasn't for the English? You know the English weren't the only colonial power right? Not even the first. What about the Spanish who committed mass genocide and wiped out the civilisations of South America? The French, the Dutch, the Portuguese. And long before that the Romans, Egyptians...

  • I like the way you only get to see the side of Pearse's face.

  • @Bogging4 thanks!

  • @14sweetchecks It's called Michael Collins :)

  • Never to be forgotten. Was their sacrifice in vain. Togeather-ness is definately forgotten. I wonder if those who laid down their lives for a so called freedom had the opportunity to gaze

into the future, would they have made the ultimate sacrifice.I will not make a judgment but i do ask you to look around and think about it. BRI - DAR
