OLPC CTO Edward J. McNierney gives us an overview of the ARM version of OLPC XO Laptop, XO 1.75, to be released soon, being optimized now in Taiwan, it provides for a sub 2 Watt XO Laptop. One Laptop Per Child created the Netbook market, now they will push the PC/Laptop industry towards ARM support for lower power consumption and lower prices through increased industry competition and optimized SoC designs. The $100 Laptop is nearer. Marvell's 610 is now one of the ARM SoC platforms that is now powerful enough to power a full desktop/laptop system.

  • why fedora?!?! barely anything runs on fedora, use debian!!

  • I want one!

  • Why Android? Let's just stick iOS on them and let kids play fart apps all day long!

Pretty sure they'd have a blast...

  • @altfuns

Exactly, why in the world would you want to run Android on the OLPC? So children from 3rd world countries can spend their yearly wages buying Angry Birds?

  • I'm not going to lie. If you can get me a cheap and light and long running laptop that I can write my college essays on, surf the internet, facebook, youtube, chat with my friends on across platforms, I'll buy it. lol

Right now I have an 11inch lenovo and my only gripe is that it's not as sturdy and I certainly can't throw it in my backpack and go running from class to class or throw books in there carelessly.

  • 8:08 Nicholas Negroponte predicted that MS was going to announce Windows on ARM within two years... two years less three days ago

  • Thank you for this interview, very well done !
