I don't get it. =/ If you're practicing like a single stroke roll or whatever it's called...like RLRLRLRL and so on, wouldn't doing them in unison make you do that when you do the actual roll?

It's easy to do it badly, yes. To do this exercise accurately requires dedicated practice and skill.
