@thatsmrlistersir Actually it isn't short for Smegma, the writers confirmed it. The actually origin of the word is unknown. The writers just made it up out of the blue, so people thought it was short for that, its like what J.K did with Hogwarts.

Well... for starters, anyone who doesn't know what a smeghead is probably is one. :P
But in Red Dwarf "smeg" was a made-up obscenity to get past censors without having to bleep everything. Depending on the context it stood in for any number of the words that couldn't be said on tv at the time.

Think of that when you hear smeg-head next, lol.
Look it up on wikipedia.
