1) Instill fear in the population, both of a foreign enemy and of themselves, as they knew the truth would partly come out.

2) An excuse to go into both Iraq and Afghanistan for geo-political reasons and for the value of opium and oil.

Government mandated healthcare, creating the ability to detain and interrogate any American citizen without due process of law(NDAA), pushing for widespread gun confiscation, and demonizing any and all who differ in opinion as either nutjob conspiracy theorists or "domestic terrorists", what looks really stupid is when a "capitalist" will stand up in defense of such a communist. He may not be a communist by definition, but he's definitely pushing for authoritarian rule.
