This is Mario Paint. It is not a PC program. It's an actual video game. Created by Nintendo, it was released on the Super NES in 1992 which came bundled with the SNES Mouse and the SNES Mouse Pad. Nintendo often referred this game as a Nintendo 'program', since it wasn't truly a video 'game'.

You cannot use a controller for this game. Your only option is to use the SNES Mouse.

For a lot of us growing up in the 80's/90's, computers were pretty rare in households and were, at the time, very expensive. Very few programs were written which could handle drawing and animating, let alone compose music, all in one package. Mario Paint was the answer for most of us, and it was one of the first experiences I can remember which taught me the basics about using a mouse. Windows 3.1 had just been released, and it would be another three years before we saw WIndows 95.

This commercial was the reason I asked for Mario Paint back in Christmas of '92. I was very interested in drawing and animating, but not so much into writing music (yet), although it looked really cool to be able to create songs using animal sounds, mario heads, hearts and flowers. It all sounded too cool.

When I got it for Christmas that year, I had a very hard time putting it down. There was just too much you could do, and you would hardly ever get bored with it, which to me, identifies a really great game. If you didn't feel like drawing that day, they had this built-in fly swatting game called "Gnat Attack" which was actually supposed to be a sort of training tool on how to use a computer mouse. Whatever the case, it was a pretty addicting game, and it is probably one of the most memorable features.

I found myself playing this game a lot after school, creating my own animations and music. One of Mario Paint's downfalls is its inability to save more than one project at a time. Your user manual provided you with instructions on how to set up your VHS tape recorder to tape your Mario Paint creations in order to save your work forever. They even suggested mailing tapes to family and friends on special occasions, such as birthdays and holidays. I remember having many tapes filled with animations I have done, songs I've written, but who knows where they are now.

It wasn't until a few years ago when I rediscovered this game and decided to push the games music editor to a level no one has ever done; re-create actual video game music in such a limited space. It has led into a direction I never would have expected, and can only thank all of you for helping making it popular. If anything, my videos have introduced Mario Paint to a whole new generation of gamers, which is very exciting to see. It's a shame too many people thought this was a PC game, although I can easily see how they would have jumped to that conclusion. After reading this video description, I hope I have cleared things up for you.

As always, thanks for watching and supporting!

  • :') this game was my favorite back then. I was so addicted... Back then, when games were actually worth playing; not like now, when its all about first person shooters and murder. I don't see how can people buy 10 different games, when they are all technically the same sh*t. Mario Paint, Mario RPG, Earthbound, Yoshi Story, Zelda Ocarina of time & Link to the past, Kablooey; now THOSE were games...

see all

  • $60.00??? thats how much I paid for the whole system

  • @ccricers The players guide was awesome. I actually I have hours of VHS recorded Mario Paint work that I will one day import to You Tube (don't worry, nothing gross.)

  • @LourdesAlexandria you..you liked earthbound.god bless you kind sir...god bless you

  • very true, there were books for this. hard to find books if you didn't order them off of nintendo power. plus sixty bucks is a lot for a kid to save up but me and my brother did and we were so happy!! and the stupid book was like fifteen dollars.

  • This "game" was even more worth it with the player's guide. What's a player's guide for a Mario Paint game like? It was mostly how to draw sprites of Mario characters and other popular things. And you couldn't just go on the internet to find emulators and sprite rips, so this guide was really handy.

  • This commercial always annoyed me because it was misleading. You couldnt even do close to that amount of animation in one scene. Regardless, I got well over my money's (parents money) worth on this title back in the day. Me and my friends always ended up making violent or dirty things on there though haha. Im actually surprised that there werent parents out there protesting this game due to the fact that most kids were making such types of animations.

  • what about the boats?

  • AND Wii. This Paint MUST Be At The Wii Virtual Console!

  • I paid 49.99 for Zelda Link to the Past

  • SIXTY DOLLARS!!! ITS MORE IF WAIT IN 2006
